Rhyl FC 4-0 CPD Porthmadog - Att: 418

Makeshift striker Mark Connolly was the hat-trick hero as Rhyl comfortably defeated lowly Porthmadog to open up a three point gap at the top of the Welsh Premier. However, it wasn’t all plain sailing despite the comfortable 4-0 score-line as resilient Porthmadog had held the lilywhites 0-0 at half-time. Chris Williams forced keeper Morgan in to a good save early on before Tyrone Kirk’s goal bound strike was deflected off a defender. Rhyl continued to create the openings during a lacklustre first half with Kirk, Matthew Williams and Connolly all being denied. After the break inform Mark Connolly turned the tide, firstly volleying in Tyrone Kirk’s cross on 47 minutes. Before heading in substitute Phil Doran’s cross on 70 minutes to make it 2-0. Just a minute later Connolly raced onto Leah’s through ball and defender Keegan pulled him back in the box for referee Dean John to award the penalty and red card the sorry defender. Up stepped a confident Connolly to blast in his hat-trick and make it 9 goals for the season. Tricky winger Tyrone Kirk added the icing on the cake late on when he collected Connolly’s pass, to then beat a defender and round keeper Morgan before scoring from an acute angle to make it 4-0. A great result for manager Greg Strong after a week of injury concerns, but undoubtedly he will be concerned with Greg Stones leaving the field early and Matthew Williams also looking an injury worry again.
